Najidah is SunnyKids founding service. The refuge was established in 1999 to accommodate and support women and children who were homeless as a result of domestic and family violence. The SunnyKids Virtual Village was carved out of the real life needs and experiences of the women and children living in these services. It was here that SunnyKids developed its passion for ‘whole of community collaboration’, which later became the ‘SunnyKids Virtual Village’ model. Whilst Najidah’s model is equally beneficial for adults and children alike, it was the determination to break intergenerational cycles of poverty and disadvantage that led to a broadening of services and the establishment of SunnyKids.
The refuge continues to be central to SunnyKids activities, providing thousands of nights of emergency accommodation every year.
