Women’s & children’s DV Accommodation

Since 1999 we have been accommodating and supporting women and their children who are homeless as a result of domestic and family violence. In partnership with the Queensland State Government, we provide 24/7 emergency accommodation and assist families and children to move on and rebuild their lives. Every year our refuges are full (other than for cleaning and maintenance). In FY18 this resulted in the provision of well in excess of 8,000 nights of accommodation.

Counselling & family support

Cooroy Family Support Centre has limited opportunities to provide strategic family support programs to assist families with securing the 5 key areas for wellbeing: Safe and Nurturing Relationships; Economic Stability; Access to good Healthcare; Success in Education; and Cultural Connectedness. The University of the Sunshine Coast Outreach Clinics are based at the Centre to provide therapeutic counselling support.

Buddies for Children & Young People

SunnyKids Village Buddies matches screened and trained volunteers (Big Buddies) with children and young people (Little Buddies) who have a need for another positive adult in their life. Village Buddies utilises low key activities such as kicking a footy, reading, going to the park etc. to create opportunities for Big and Little Buddies to get to know each other, build self-esteem and confidence. From time to time we have group activities with other Big and Little Buddies too. Click the I need a Buddy Button to register your interest and we will get back to you about current opportunities for taking on new “Little Buddies” and “Big Buddies” too.

SunnyKids in Schools

SunnyKids in Schools (SKIS) is an adaptable solution for schools that enables customised support for those children identified by the school as needing support in a wide range of ways. We provide partner schools on the Sunshine Coast and families with the resilience and relationship building resources needed to re-engage and support children and their families. Programs include:

Prioritised Referral program:
Our prioritised referral program enables fast, yearlong access to the 200+ community services within the SunnyKids Virtual Village. Our proven model focuses on economic stability, engaged education, health care, safe and nurturing relationships and cultural connectedness. We’ll work with your school, students and families to understand the symptoms and resolve the cause of the issues. Each partner school receives ten referrals per year and refers the cases they want to refer without having to reach particular thresholds of risk before students and families can get help. Whilst we can accept crisis referrals the program works best for schools by referring children early before issues become too complex. In general a school will refer more crisis cases at the beginning of working with us – but our proven model reduces that over time.

Student Support Services Capacity Builder:
The SunnyKids team has decades of experience and connections to every service on the Sunshine Coast. Our Capacity Builder program will provide you and or your team with a dedicated professional to attend your student support meetings and provide your team with an external perspective, plus connect you with our 200+ other service providers. Together we will build the required support service network around your school, students and staff.

Mentoring Through Sport (MTS):
MTS is an 8-week withdrawal from class program involving high profile sporting mentors such as former Australian Heavyweight Boxing Champ “Awesome” Bobby Wilson and the Brisbane Broncos. Mentors engage with vulnerable students (selected by our host schools), teach self-discipline and help increase self-esteem. Our Mentors are supported by SunnyKids Frontline Workers who work closely with participating students. At the conclusion of the program (and within the confines of privacy laws), SunnyKids provide guidance to the school regarding any issues the program has brought to light with the group and or individual students.
