Sam Coverdale, Winemaker – Polperro Wines
Sam Coverdale is the founder and winemaker of Polperro Wines in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. His single vineyard label, mixes organic and biodynamic principals to produce high-class pinot gris, chardonnay and pinot noir.
Sam shares some fun facts:
Favourite food? Japanese.
Favourite place to travel? Vietnam.
What three people would you like most to invite to a dinner party? Phillip Adams, Oscar Wilde, Cleopatra.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not winemaking? Surfing, ready and learning about history / current affairs and peoples personal stories.
Most valuable piece of advice you’ve ever received? Do what you are passionate about.
If you were to describe your personality as a wine, what sort of wine would you be and why? Characterful and free flowing but structured.
What else would you like us to know? I started the winery 15 years ago in my mid-twenties out of frustration with the lack of personality and focus in the wines being produced in the early to mid-2000s. Things have come a long way in Australia and there are so many exciting wines being produced by many talented Australian winemakers and these wines are in turn being supported by a very informed Australian wine consumer. It’s a very exciting time to be making wine. As a winery, we are all about giving back to the land and incidentally are certified biodynamic and organic. As a result we feel our vineyards are better placed to cope with the pressures of climate change and make more interesting wines in addition.
Why have you chosen to support this event and SunnyKids? It’s great to support a local charity for an area I grew up in and gave me so much as a kid growing up, and of course I hope in a small way that this could help other young kids gain access to similar opportunities.
