FireFly Education - Transitional Housing Supporters

As long-time supporters of SunnyKids, Ann Smales and Peter Stannard of Firefly Education have played a pivotal role in bringing the Transitional Housing Project to life. The idea for the project began with a conversation and a vision—Ann and Peter approached SunnyKids CEO Kathleen Hope with land and a desire to make a meaningful, long-term difference for families in need.

After years of wanting to give back in the area of social housing, the time finally felt right. A turning point came after attending a P100 event, where they heard first-hand accounts of the desperate housing shortage facing families on the Sunshine Coast. That moment became the catalyst to take action.

Working closely with SunnyKids, a draughtsman, and builder James McCartney, Ann and Peter helped shape the plans, design the homes, and lay the foundations for what has become one of SunnyKids’ most impactful projects to date.

Their hope is that these homes will provide more than just shelter—they will offer safety, time, and the space for families to heal and rebuild. They understand the urgent need for transitional housing that bridges the gap between crisis care and long-term stability, giving families the best possible chance at a fresh start.

For the Firefly Education team, the project has been a privilege. While their educational publishing work impacts student outcomes across Australia, this initiative has given them a chance to support their own local community in a deeply tangible way.

Over the years, their team has also connected with SunnyKids in fun, hands-on ways—assembling bikes and flat-pack desks at company AGMs to support children in SunnyKids refuges. These team-building experiences have strengthened their sense of purpose and community.

Ann and Peter encourage others to get involved in any way they can—whether it’s time, resources, or support. For them, giving back locally has been one of the most rewarding decisions they’ve made.
