Game on as Lightning Backs SunnyKids to Support Local Children

5 May 2026: SunnyKids and the Sunshine Coast Lightning have officially announced a new community partnership, bringing together two of the region’s most recognised organisations to deliver meaningful outcomes for vulnerable children and families.

The partnership was unveiled at the Lightning’s home game at UniSC Arena on Sunday, in front of a strong local crowd, marking the beginning of a collaborative initiative focused on early intervention, mentoring and positive engagement through sport.

The announcement comes as demand for support continues to rise, with SunnyKids supporting more than 3,600 individuals in 2024–2025 – including over 2,300 children – reflecting a significant increase in families requiring assistance.

At the centre of the partnership is a new pilot program, launched in late April, which will see SunnyKids and Lightning players work together to support young people through structured, sport-based activities designed to build confidence, resilience and healthy relationships.

SunnyKids CEO Kathleen Hope said the partnership represents a powerful alignment of purpose and capability.

“What makes this partnership so impactful is its focus on service delivery and real outcomes for children,” Ms Hope said.

“With more than 3,600 individuals supported in the past year alone, we know the need in our community is significant. Partnerships like this allow us to extend our reach and provide young people with the support, role models and opportunities they need to thrive.”

Sunshine Coast Lightning CEO Justin Pascoe said the organisation is committed to making a meaningful contribution beyond the court.

“We are incredibly proud to partner with SunnyKids and support the important work they do in our community.

“As a club, we have a responsibility to use our platform to create positive impact, and this partnership allows us to connect with young people in a way that is both practical and meaningful,” Mr Pascoe said.

The program builds on SunnyKids’ broader prevention and early intervention work, which includes school-based initiatives that reached more than 800 participants last year, alongside targeted support services for children and families experiencing vulnerability.

Ms Hope said collaboration is critical in addressing increasingly complex community challenges.

“By working together, we can better support children to feel safe, connected and empowered – and ultimately help break the cycle of disadvantage.”

SunnyKids and the Sunshine Coast Lightning will continue to roll out joint initiatives throughout the year as part of the partnership.
